EXCLUSIVE: Hong Kong’s dwindling LGBTQ funding scheme mainly goes to groups with no ties to community (HKFP 2026-01-18)

Recipients of the Hong Kong government’s Equal Opportunities (Sexual Orientation) Funding Scheme include groups that organise beach clean-ups and AI classes. Most of them appear to have pro-establishment ties, an HKFP investigation has found.

Five of the seven groups awarded funding under a government scheme for projects on sexual minorities have no track record of LGBTQ-related work, prompting concern among veteran activists about their effectiveness.

The recipients include groups that organise beach clean-ups and artificial intelligence (AI) classes. Most have apparent pro-establishment ties, an HKFP investigation has found. They received between HK$30,000 and HK$75,000 under the annual Equal Opportunities (Sexual Orientation) Funding Scheme, run by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau (CMAB).

Meanwhile, many LGBTQ NGOs that in past years had received funding were rejected.
